Characterization of Rolling Contact Fatigue Cracks in Rails by Eddy Current Pulsed Thermography

چکیده
Locating and characterizing rolling contact fatigue (RCF) cracks in rails is gaining attention the railway industry. Eddy current pulsed thermography (ECPT) can detect such by combining benefits of electromagnetic excitation thermal diffusion. To date, most studies focus on investigating specific features based artificial defects, verification real lacking. In this article, to establish best means different inclination angles, eight spatial temporal ECPT are evaluated idealized RCF cracks. Results show that longer time slots pulse durations make relations clearer. For evaluation cracks, area-based kurtosis-based suitable robust measures for angles.

Stress Measurement Using Pulsed Eddy Current Thermography
This paper reports a noncontact inspection method, using Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) stimulated thermography, for the evaluation of the anisotropic dependency of electrical conductivity of steel exposed to tensile stress. This method combines microscope lens based thermography with PEC using a rectangular excitation coil, giving directional excitation, to infer the electromagnetic properties vari...
متن کاملEddy Current Testing and Sizing of Fatigue Cracks
This study proposes an investment for the evaluation of fatigue cracks by eddy current testing (ECT). Fatigue cracks (FC) manufactured on SUS316 plates are detected using ECT. Inverse analysis is applied to the ECT signals and both crack depth and length are estimated. Two models are applied, one is the EDM model without conductivity, and the other is the SCC model with partial conductivity. Th...
متن کاملElectromagnetic pulsed thermography for natural cracks inspection
Emerging integrated sensing and monitoring of material degradation and cracks are increasingly required for characterizing the structural integrity and safety of infrastructure. However, most conventional nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods are based on single modality sensing which is not adequate to evaluate structural integrity and natural cracks. This paper proposed electromagnetic puls...
متن کاملEddy Current Pulsed Thermography with Different Excitation Configurations for Metallic Material and Defect Characterization
This paper reviews recent developments of eddy current pulsed thermography (ECPT) for material characterization and nondestructive evaluation (NDE). Due to the fact that line-coil-based ECPT, with the limitation of non-uniform heating and a restricted view, is not suitable for complex geometry structures evaluation, Helmholtz coils and ferrite-yoke-based excitation configurations of ECPT are pr...
متن کاملCharacterization of Magnetron Sputtered Coatings by Pulsed Eddy Current Techniques
A method that uses induced pulsed eddy currents for characterization of thick magnetron sputtered Nb coatings on steel is presented in this paper. The objectives of this work are to develop a system for rapid quantitative nondestructive inspection of coatings as well as to determine the correlation between coating properties, such as density and purity, and eddy current measured resistivity of ...
